Hawa Mahal: About, Time, History, Activities, Entry Fee

In 1799, a 5-story building was constructed by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh belonging to the Kachhwaha Rajput dynasty known as Hawa Mahal. As the building implies, it's a palace constructed with 953 windows. Due to its uniquely constructed architecture, the palace became a distinguished tourist spot in Jaipur City. It is also known as the " Palace of winds”. The palace was built in a way that the Royal women can have a view of the outside world, as per their custom they weren't allowed to go out.

History

Kachhwaha Rajput ruler Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh was so impressed by the Khetri Mahal structure in Jhunjhunu, that he built Hawa traditions where the palace women can enjoy their daily activities, and the festivals showcased on the streets. Through this, the women get a sense to experience freedom whilst staying inside the palace and keeping their traditions intact.

Architecture

The palace has an architectural blend of Hindu (Rajput) and Islamic (Mughal) designs. The design is made of a 5-storied pyramid palace resembling the shape of Lord Krishna's Crown, with a height of 15m. The sandstones used pink and red to build this monument, therefore the monument doesn't consist of any stairs, thus ramps are the only ways to reach the top stories. There are a total of 953 windows also known as 'jharokha’ craved by wood, these jharokhas are constructed in such a manner that the cold breeze circulates from the windows keeping the palace air-conditioned even in the summertime. These windows consist of small chambers where the Royal women can experience the street view without going out. In the center of each chamber, there are fountains built to praise the winds flowing giving the breeze even more cooling effects.

Activities
